1. What Are Web Services?
- Web services are the services provided by the World Wide Web., They include: chatting, emailing, video conferencing, e-learning, e-shopping, e-reservation, e-groups, and social networking., In simple terms, they are ways for two electronic devices to communicate with each other using technology and programming standards.
2. Electronic Mail (E-Mail), Short form of "electronic mail", a system for receiving, sending, and storing electronic messages., Preferred over traditional postal service because delivery is instant and anyone can use it., Messages can include text, images, and formatted documents., Can be sent from PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
How E-Mail Works
- Sender composes message on their device.
- Message travels through telephone/internet lines.
- Message reaches recipient's account within seconds.
Protocols Used in E-Mail

3. Chat, Electronic communication between two or more individuals using computers., Both users must be on the Internet at the same time., Communication occurs through typed text messages (and with 3G technology, video data too)., Platforms: Instant messaging, Windows, Skype, ICQ.
4. Video Conferencing, A conference between two or more people at various remote locations, connected via the Internet., Transmits both video and audio data in real time., Each end user has a webcam and microphone; participants view each other on monitors and hear through speakers.
- Multipoint videoconferencing allows three or more participants to sit in a virtual conference room.
Advantages
- Reduced travelling cost, lowers distance and travel time
- Increased productivity, faster decision-making without physical meetings
- Going Green, saves fuel; eco-friendly initiative
Disadvantages
- Technical issues, depends heavily on high-speed internet
- Lack of personal contact, not suitable for all types of discussions (e.g., job interviews)
5. E-Learning, A method of providing guidance and delivering information using technology (laptops, desktops, smart devices)., Individuals don't need to attend a classroom; they can learn from any convenient place at their own pace., Courses include built-in evaluation tools like quizzes and multiple choice questions.
Advantages
- Class work can be scheduled around work and family
- Reduces travel time and costs
- Students can select materials matching their level
- Can study anywhere with computer and internet
- Self-paced learning modules
- Flexible discussion times (bulletin boards, chat rooms)
- Accommodates different learning styles
- Develops internet and computer skills
Disadvantages
- Students with low motivation may fall behind
- Without routine structure, students may get confused
- Students may feel isolated

6. E-Reservation, An online reservation system enabling hotels, resorts, theatre operators, and transport companies to maximize revenues without human booking agents., Users can book tickets, rooms, etc. without visiting a booking office., Internally integrated with the company's database.

- Reduces administrative costs
- Helps manage inventory better

7. E-Shopping, The purchase of products and services over the Internet using desktop, laptop, or smart devices., Products: clothes, shoes, groceries, books, furniture, home decor.
Benefits
- Reduces time for customers (search and compare from home)

- Faster product movement (manufacturer to customer directly)
- Immediate funds availability through e-payment
Disadvantages
- Customers cannot touch and feel products

Social Networking, A platform that helps people connect with others and build social relations., Users can search/choose friends, post pictures, comment on activities, share ideas, events, and interests., Control over shared content and who they communicate with., Also used for marketing businesses and showcasing products.
9. E-Groups, A list of email users that can share information among each other., Maintained by a single administrator who controls access levels., Users within the group can send emails, share files, access folders, and view calendars., Users outside the group do not get permission to access group resources.
