What is the GATE DA exam pattern?
Single 3-hour computer-based test for 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions (15 marks) and 55 DA-track questions (85 marks). Mix of MCQs, MSQs, and NATs. Same negative-marking rules as GATE CS.
Who should pick GATE DA over GATE CS?
GATE DA is designed for candidates targeting AI / data science / statistics programmes (IIT M.Tech in AI, IISc, JNCASR, etc.). It rewards strong probability, linear algebra, and ML intuition over systems-heavy CS topics.
How much of GATE DA is pure ML and AI?
Roughly 30 to 35 percent of the marks come from Machine Learning plus Artificial Intelligence units. Probability and statistics is another 25 percent. Linear algebra plus calculus add 15 to 20 percent. Programming and Databases share the rest.
Do I need a CS degree to crack GATE DA?
No, but you do need solid linear algebra, probability, and Python. Candidates from Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, and ECE backgrounds regularly clear it.
How is GATE DA scored vs GATE CS?
Both use the same normalised scoring. A GATE DA score is comparable to a GATE CS score for institutes that accept either, though most AI-focused programmes weight DA more.
Are PYQs available for GATE DA?
Yes, and they matter. GATE DA is newer than GATE CS, so the PYQ pool is smaller, which makes every paper more important. Solve every previous year paper at least twice.
